“You know what they say dear boy? Tenure. Tenure is king. We’ve got it, and, as much as the others might not like it, we’re here to stay.”
Gold law is notoriously complicated, and poorly understood by even the most gifted of Awakened Jurists, but is none the less the foundation of Awakened Society and jurisprudence. Hertfordshires mage population owes its society to a discovery – maybe a translation – performed by Asgeira of the Mysterium in the C19th. Asgeira, origionally from the Concilia of Reykjavik, had located a series of obsidian tablets which offered insight into a number of laws, the vast majority of which made no sense at all.
Wedged between an injunction to perform the Dance of the Emerald Maiden at the Concovation of Lies, and a forbiddance against Heredii from being permitted to Attain The Manifold Mantle until the Bronze Arbiters had Elevated them, Asgeira found a reference to a claim made and passed into law that granted the distance of thirteen ranjits from a particular marsh, and had granted it to the College of the Shadowed Eye for their use in such studies as were deemed to be fitting, and their limited autonomny from the jurisprudence of the surrounding concilia. Asgeira, who had been looking for a way to elevate her stock in the Mysterium, promptly set out to locate this lost college.
Many years of investigation later, she had pinned down the marsh as being the prehistoric silage site close to Knebworth in the United Kingdom. Decamping with a small band of followers, she travelled to the location, and set about trying to discover the college remains. Tragically Asgeira did not live to see the final results of her work, falling in battle with a Brilu band who viewed the site as sacred, and resented interference from outside magii.
The College was, however, discovered and refounded – The original charter was discovered, which lays out the rules under which the College must operate, and the Brilu were driven back (and commonly held as dispersed, although it has been noted that “accidents” are common when mages are careless.
